As far as the language goes, Spanish is a lot easier to learn than you think. From personal experience, I travelled to Ecuador to do volunteer work for 3 months and I did have a few mishaps. I left my money belt in a toilet at a hostel and it disappeared-DOH! But that's just forgetful old me. Apart from that I had a great time. I went to the Galapagos Islands and did all sorts of cool work in the rainforest. Believe me, you don't want to look back in years to come and regret not having these sort of experiences. Make sure you take emergency contact numbers with you and just chill! :)Answer #2:
buy a book and cd and learn some basic spanishmake photocopies of passport and travel documents
get a hidden money belt
send an email to yourself with all document details including bank telephone numbers
google travel scams for the region u are going too
take some travellers chqs,cash,credit card,atm card so u have options to get money if for example the atm machine swallows your card
inform bank where and when u are going so they will authorise your card abroad
only use cash to buy stuff,cards can be cloned
only withdraw cash from an atm attached to or inside a bank and make sure u cover your hand when putting in the pin number
get a nationwide flex account as these are the chepaest atm to use abroad
take an unlocked phone and buy a sim card at your destination
stay in a reputable hotel and put important stuff in the safe but not everything in case the safe gets robbed......i usually carry a card with me
